Inland Sea, Turner Galleries 2017, Perth

Inland Sea recasts the strange and tragic events from the mutiny and shipwreck of the Dutch vessel Batavia which occurred off the coast of Geraldton in the 17th century, along with smaller stories within the Gilt Dragon legend (Lancelin), Zeewijk (Abrolhos Islands) and more recently the Alkimos wreck near Yanchep.

Inland Sea presents a contemporary reimagining of maritime painting and objects. The paintings are a process of revealing the connected stories within Western Australia’s long maritime past, considering fateful events through a contemporary lens. Ceramic works respond to the material objects and items salvaged from the wrecks, functioning as contemporised 'archaeological' artefacts that are a product of historical and location based research
